To support the Friends of Lazarus is to embrace something extraordinary that goes beyond mere volunteerism. It is a journey through three basic pillars: friendship, prayer and service to the needy, the poor, the simple. It is a love we have received from God and wish to give to those who feel excluded or loveless. Along with us also collaborate people who are not believers, but who share the values on which our commitment is based.
We want to reach out to all people who experience situations of suffering and marginalization. It is from this love for the least of these that “Friends of Lazarus” takes its name. Lazarus is both the poor man mentioned in the Gospels, who dies in front of the rich man’s house, and a real character: the friend of Jesus who is brought back to life. For us, being Friends of Lazarus means being friends also with those who are not materially poor, but who seek or have a right to a life rich in serenity, values, affection, landmarks, faith and listening.
Therefore, our commitment also extends to children, youth and those who need to be educated, accompanied and listened to. The needs around us are enormous: material, human and spiritual needs. However, housing, jobs, education and rights are not enough to make people happy. It is the love, friendship, listening and faith we share that bring peace and joy. It is the poor who teach us so much and often we are the ones who have to thank them for what we receive. It is a mutual exchange, a genuine friendship among equals.
