Cannabis sativa is a widely used recreational drug, and its usage is relatively common among individuals with depression. Previous research has yielded conflicting results: some studies suggest that cannabis has antidepressant effects, while others indicate an increase in depressive symptoms among cannabis users. The study aimed to examine the impact of Cannabis sativa extract on rats displaying depressive-like behaviors.

The study found that treating depressive-like rats with Cannabis sativa extract did not lead to improvements in behavioral or neurochemical analyses. The results of the study suggest that these worsened symptoms could potentially explain the reported increase in depressive symptoms and memory impairment among human cannabis users.
